May’s Birthstone, the emerald has been prized by centuries.  Some Fast Facts:

  • First Known Emerald Mines were in Egypt in 330 BC.
  • Lush green color can reduce eye strain
  • Proud member of the beryl family.  This makes it aquamarine’s cousin
  • 7-8 on the Mohs Hardness Scale
  • Formed under extreme temperatures and pressure
  • Notable from Colombia, Brazil, and Zambia
  • Assumed to be oiled always.  This means no soaking, heating or steaming.  Can be re-oiled.
  • Synthetics are difficult to distinguish from their natural counterparts because the inclusions look similar.

A quick thank you to GIA for the gorgeous photo of a Colombian emerald.
