June Birthstone Part 1: Pearl

Few things in life are beautiful AND natural.  Pearls, one of the few organic gemstones begin their life in an mollusk.  There are four main classifications of cultured pearls: freshwater, akoya (saltwater), Tahitian (usually black or gray) and South Sea (usually big and yellow).  Each pearl type comes from a different species of mollusk and they form in different water temperatures.

Natural pearls form without human… encouragement, and are usually small (seed pearls) or irregularly shaped (baroque or keshi/rice).  There are varying “beliefs” surrounding pearls.

Cultured or freshwater pearls are considered to offer the power of love, money, protection, and luck.  They are thought to keep children safe.  The Greeks believed that wearing pearls would promote marital bliss and prevent newlywed women from crying.

The most valuable pearls are perfectly symmetrical and exhibit minute blemishes, rose orient, and a satiny or mirror-like luster (depending on the type of pearl).  Pearls are soft, so they should not be stored with other jewelry (especially diamonds!)  Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing, and try to avoid contact with ANY chemicals (including perfume and hairspray).  Pearls should ideally be re-strung once a year.  Because they are strung on silk thread (organic), it can break down after time and with exposure to perspiration.
